DOSAGE Cataract Surgery: 1 gtt QID beginning 24 hours after surgery x 2 weeks
Refractive Cornea Surgery: 1-2 gtts within the hour prior to corneal refractive surgery. 1-2 gtts within 15 minutes after surgery, and continued TID for up to 3 days.

INDICATIONS Voltaren Ophthalmic is indicated for the treatment of postoperative inflammation in patients who have undergone cataract extraction and for the temporary relief of pain and photophobia in patients undergoing corneal refractive surgery.
MECHANISM OF ACTION NSAID (COX inhibitor)
MICROBIOLOGY Diclofenac sodium is one of a series of phenylacetic acids that has demonstrated anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties in pharmacological studies. It is thought to inhibit the enzyme cyclooxygenase, which is essential in the biosynthesis of prostaglandins.
CONTRAINDICATIONS & WARNINGS Increased Bleeding Time, Delayed Healing, Corneal Effects (Use of topical NSAIDs may result in keratitis. In some susceptible patients, continued use of topical NSAIDs may result in epithelial breakdown, corneal thinning, corneal erosion, corneal ulceration, or corneal perforation.
Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients in the formula or to other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
PEDIATRIC USE Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients have not been established.
PREGNANCY Teratogenic Effects Category C. There are, however, no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Because animal reproduction studies are not always predictive of human response, this drug should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Prostaglandin biosynthesis inhibitors harm the fetal cardiovascular system.
