SYMPTOMS Lid tenderness
SIGNS Lid swelling, redness
WORK-UP Thorough history. Slit lamp examination
TREATMENT (1) Lid cleaning BID (2) Warm compresses 15mins BID-TID (3) Maxitrol ung TID x 7 days (4) If severe, consider Doxycycline 100mg qD or BID or Augmentin 500mg BID x 7 days
FOLLOW-UP Frequent follow-ups are rarely necessary.

ETIOLOGY Obstruction/inflammation/infection of a gland in the eyelid. Staphylococcal species are the most common bacterial source
DIFFERENTIAL DX Preseptal cellulitis, chalazion, sebaceous carcinoma, pyogenic granuloma
NOTES Internal hordeolum: infection of meibomian gland.
External hordeolum: infection of gland of Zeis or Moll
Association with dry eye syndrome and blepharitis.
Hordeola can develop into chalazion.
