SYMPTOMS Lid twitch
SIGNS Lid twitch/contractions
WORK-UP Thorough history and slit lamp examination | MRI of the brain may be indicated in atypical cases
TREATMENT Observation | Botox injection into orbicularis muscle | In rare cases, myectomy may be considered.
FOLLOW-UP Frequent follow-up is not necessary unless symptoms greatly worsen | Follow-ups after botox may be every few months
ADDITIONAL LAB | TESTS MRI of the brain may be indicated in atypical cases
ETIOLOGY Currently unknown
DIFFERENTIAL DX Myokymia | Hemifacial spasm
NOTES Blepharospasm is bilateral, as opposed to myokymia which is usually unilateral
In severe cases, blepharospasm may cause episodes of functional blindness
