DOSAGE Epidemic Keratoconjunctivitis (EKC) Off-Label
(1) Anesthetize affected eye(s) with 0.5% proparacaine ophthalmic solu­tion. Allow 30 seconds to take effect. (2) Place a few drops of 5% Betadine into the inferior fornix (3) Have the patient close his or her eyes and blink to spread solution through­out the affected surface. (4) Wipe away excess solution and con­sider gentle irrigation with sterile saline after 1 to 2 minutes. (5) RX Lotemax QID x 5 days + Oral Meds x 1 days (optional)

INDICATIONS BETADINE 5% Sterile Ophthalmic Prep Solution for the eye is indicated for prepping of the periocular region (lids, brow, and cheek) and irrigation of the ocular surface (cornea, conjunctiva, and palpebral fornices).
MECHANISM OF ACTION Antiseptic, bactericidal, fungicidal, virucidal.
MICROBIOLOGY The antimicrobial action of povidone-iodine occurs after iodine disassociates from the complex. Once in the free form, iodine rapidly penetrates microbial cell membranes and interacts with proteins, nucleotides, and fatty acids in the cytoplasm and cytoplasmic membrane. This interaction ultimately results in rapid cell death
CONTRAINDICATIONS & WARNINGS Do not use on individuals known to be sensitive to iodine, or other components of this product.
PEDIATRIC USE Keep out of reach of children | Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients not established.
PREGNANCY Category C Animal reproduction studies have not been conducted with BETADINE 5%
NOTE EKC treatment almost exclusively used for adults and seldom used when pt has already been symptomatic for more than 5 or 6 days.
