INDICATIONS AzaSite® is indicated for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis. Some success in MGD and Ocular Rosacea
MECHANISM OF ACTION Macrolide antibiotic (mainly Bacteriostatic)
MICROBIOLOGY Block bacterial protein synthesis. Broad spectrum antibiotic. Azithromycin has been shown to be active against most isolates of the following microorganisms, both in vitro and clinically in conjunctival infections CDC coryneform group G Haemophilus influenzae Staphylococcus aureus Streptococcus mitis group Streptococcus pneumoniae
CONTRAINDICATIONS & WARNINGS Macrolide hypersensitivity. Avoid if pt. allergic to erythromycin.
PEDIATRIC USE The efficacy of AzaSite in treating bacterial conjunctivitis in pediatric patients one year or older has been demonstrated in controlled clinical trials
PREGNANCY Pregnancy Category B. Reproduction studies have been performed in rats and mice at doses up to 200 mg/kg/day. The highest dose was associated with moderate maternal toxicity.
